Pillar V · The Nine Pillars

Commons Bank & CUE

Commons Bank is a sovereign, non-extractive financial institution. The Commons Unit of Exchange recognises verified contributions to human and ecological wellbeing.

The two free books place this Pillar within the complete Commons World architecture.

Commons Bank & Commons Unit of Exchange

The role of this Pillar

Every economy rewards certain behaviours and lets others go unseen. The activities that receive economic recognition tend to grow. The ones that remain invisible tend to struggle — no matter how much value they actually create. The clean water, pollination, and climate stability that functioning ecosystems provide freely and continuously are worth an estimated $125–145 trillion a year, more than twice global GDP, and appear on no conventional balance sheet. The unpaid care work that makes the rest of the economy function accounts for 30 to 35% of economic activity in most countries, and is invisible to it. Commons Bank (CB) and the Commons Unit of Exchange (CUE) exist to close that gap.

CB is the institution: a sovereign financial institution with no shareholders, established under Commons World principles and independently verified by the Alliance for Transparent Enterprise (ATE). It holds current and savings accounts in both CUE and fiat currency, lends to the regenerative agriculture, affordable housing, and community infrastructure that conventional lenders routinely underserve, and moves remittances across borders through the AURA mesh network at a fraction of the 6–8% that global money transfer typically costs a family sending money home. No account data is sold, profiled, or used for anything beyond the transaction the holder authorised.

CUE is what CB issues: the sovereign currency of Commons World, and the economic expression of the Prime Directive itself. It is not mined, printed, or created on credit, and it cannot be issued on the strength of a pledge, a report, or a declaration of intent. It is issued only once ATE has independently confirmed that a measurable contribution to human or ecological wellbeing has occurred, assessed against Planetary Coherence & Health's baselines and permanently recorded in the Commons Registry. Contribution precedes recognition. Always.

That makes CUE unusually hard to fake and unusually hard to capture.

No single institution controls the whole chain — PCH sets the standard, ATE verifies it, the Registry preserves the record, and only then does CB issue recognition. Every unit in circulation traces back to a specific, named act of restoration or contribution that anyone can examine. And holding more of it confers no governance power over Commons World; CUE recognises contribution, it doesn't create rulers.

CUE isn't a closed system. The fiat bridge lets any holder convert to and from conventional currency at a published rate, and Commons Pay supports transactions that mix CUE and fiat in any proportion — a supplier can accept 70% CUE and 30% fiat in the same sale. What gives the currency its underlying economy, though, is something more fundamental: the founding members of the Evolutionary League have agreed to accept CUE for real services — CB accounts, ATE certification, EL membership — which means CUE has genuine utility from day one, not just aspirational value. The agreement precedes the currency. Always.

For three centuries, the dominant economic architecture has paid for extraction and left restoration to charity. CUE inverts that: it pays for the healing and lets the damage remain what it has always actually been — a cost, not a profit.

The Hidden World is the evidence companion — a chapter for each of the twelve challenges, plus the Nine Pillars in full. Commons Community is the field guide you can read in one sitting. Both are free. If you are reading this for an institution, the contact page explains how to open a conversation.
